“Something there is that does not love a wall”, Robert Frost tells us. Much as we cling to our walls we humans carry a deep longing for connection. I suspect it is to this that we owe the fact that humans are social creatures. We are not built to be alone. The soul is delighted by connection and there is hardly a more severe injury to it than isolation from others. Some profound subconscious need is fulfilled through relationship.

Every time I make a connection with another, even through so small a gesture as eye contact with the grocery clerk, I can feel the joyful leaping in some hidden subterranean chamber of my soul. Some victory has been won or trouble soothed. Whenever I witness a random act of kindness, heal a rift, find a new friend–– I hear again that faint song. The spirit I wish to find is the one that delights in producing nothing but pure joyfulness!
